The Pima County Republican Party will elect a new chairman next month to replace Joe Pennington, who resigned from that post last week.

Attorney John Munger, a former state party chairman and past member of the Arizona Board of Regents, is so far the only candidate seeking to replace Pennington. Precinct committee members will elect a replacement at a special meeting scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Woods Memorial Library, 3455 N. First Ave.

Pennington said he stepped down to pay more attention to his financial advising business. "The job has just taken so much time that my business has really suffered," he said.

Munger said he hopes to revitalize the party's fund raising and strengthen its organizational structure in preparation for next year's elections. He also hopes the party can assist GOP candidates in the upcoming Tucson City Council elections.

"We have a lot of active people in the business community who believe in what the Republican Party believes in," he said. "We need to get them into the party and get them active in the organization."
